Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Purpose of the South Brevard Debutante Program?
First and foremost, the South Brevard Debutante Program honors a select group of exceptional young women from our local community. Participation connects each Debutante to a distinguished network of accomplished women—past and present—who serve as mentors, role models, and lifelong resources. Regardless of a Debutante’s future path, she becomes part of a supportive sisterhood rooted in leadership, service, and tradition.
Second, the program offers a meaningful and memorable year-long experience, culminating in the Debutante Ball. Throughout the year, Debutantes participate in social, educational, and service-oriented activities designed to foster confidence, poise, and personal growth.
Finally, the program provides a lifetime connection to past Debutantes. These relationships create enduring friendships and open doors to mentoring, networking, and leadership opportunities that extend well beyond the Debutante year. The sense of community and continuity offered by the South Brevard Debutante Program is truly unique.
What Are the Criteria for Becoming a South Brevard Debutante?
Becoming a South Brevard Debutante is a distinguished honor extended to a limited number of young women each year. Those selected exemplify academic achievement, leadership, integrity, and a commitment to service. Debutantes are recognized as role models among their peers and emerging leaders within the Brevard County community.
Participation in the program is a meaningful credential that reflects positively on college applications and future professional opportunities, signaling a young woman’s dedication to leadership, community involvement, and personal excellence.
Prospective Debutantes are invited to submit applications. Selection criteria include:
Applicants must demonstrate excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, employment (if applicable), and/or community service.
Each applicant should exhibit strong moral character, mature and appropriate behavior, and clear leadership potential.
Applicants may be recommended and supported by individuals familiar with the mission and standards of the South Brevard Debutante Program, including Board members, past or present Debutante families, or respected community members.
What Happens During the Debutante Year?
The Debutante year is a thoughtfully curated experience for Debutantes and their families, designed to build relationships, confidence, and lasting memories.
Throughout the year, participants enjoy:
Social events hosted by the Board and Debutante families to honor all members of the class.
Participation in community service projects that support local organizations that have a mission benefitting women and children.
Educational workshops focused on personal development, etiquette, finance, leadership, communication skills, college and professional readiness, physical and mental health, relationship violence, and responsible social media use.
Opportunities to connect with former Debutantes who provide mentorship, networking, and guidance.
Special events for Debutantes and their mothers.
Presenter–debutante waltz instruction to prepare for one of the most cherished moments of the Debutante Ball—the formal waltz, consistently remembered as a highlight by both Debutantes and their presenters.
The year provides a unique opportunity for families to spend meaningful time together during a pivotal transition before college. Past participants frequently reflect on the Debutante year as a defining experience filled with friendships and memories that last a lifetime.
What Is the Time Commitment?
The South Brevard Debutante Program is designed to complement, not compete with, the busy schedules of high-achieving young women. While the program spans approximately one-year, mandatory activities are intentionally limited and scheduled well in advance.
On average, participation requires only a few hours per month—and not every month. Past Debutantes consistently report that the program fits comfortably alongside academic, extracurricular, and family commitments.
What Are the Costs Associated With Participation?
The financial commitment for participation is often less than expected for a program of this caliber. The Program Fee is distributed over the course of the year, allowing families to plan accordingly. Specific amounts may vary from year to year and are fully disclosed during the invitational process.
Additional expenses include:
Debutante Attire: A white ball gown and accessories for the Ball. Many families choose to borrow or purchase gowns at reduced cost through former Debutantes, consignment shops, or formalwear retailers.
Family Apparel: Formal tuxedo rental for gentlemen, typically arranged through the program’s designated vendor at a negotiated rate. The Ball is black tie; as such, appropriate attire is required for family members and guests attending.
Charity Party: Each Debutante hosts (or co-hosts) a social event to benefit a local charity. Events are designed to be meaningful and celebratory, not extravagant, and families are encouraged to collaborate to keep costs manageable.
In summary, the South Brevard Debutante Program is intentionally structured to be accessible and affordable while offering an exceptional, high-quality experience. The value of the relationships, mentorship, and memories gained far exceeds the financial investment.
